Manchester Metropolitan University (often abbreviated MMU) is a public university located in Manchester, England. The university traces its origins to the Manchester Mechanics Institute and the Manchester School of Design, which formed Manchester Polytechnic in 1970. Manchester Polytechnic then gained university status under the government's Further and Higher Education Act, becoming the Manchester Metropolitan University in 1992.


Manchester Metropolitan University is an accredited member of the Association of MBAs, and member of the University Alliance, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the North West Universities Association, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the European University Association.

Today, it is also home to the Manchester School of Art, the Manchester School of Theatre, as well as the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) administered in collaboration with the University of Manchester.

The university is organised into five faculties:

  • Arts and Humanities

  • Business and Law

  • Education

  • Health, Psychology and Social Care

  • Science and Engineering

In the session 2019/20, the University had 33,420 students, making it the 10th largest university in the UK (out of 169).[5] The University employs 4,810 staff, comprising 1,610 full-time and 1,115 part-time academic staff and 2,090 support staff.

Entry requirements for Indian Students:


These entry and language requirements are a general guide – they’ll help you understand whether Manchester Met is right for you.

If you have these qualifications, that doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to get the place you want.


Undergraduate entry requirement:

You must have both:

  • passed Standard XII with a good grade

  • and the Higher Secondary School Certificate

You should have the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at level 6.0, with no scores less than 5.5 in any section. We may accept equivalent qualifications.

We will accept the following XII standard English State Boards with a score of 70% or above as an alternative to IELTS:

  • CBSE

  • CISCE (ISC)

We will accept the following XII standard English State Boards with a score of 80% or above as an alternative to IELTS:

  • Maharashtra

  • Tamil Nadu

  • West Bengal

Postgraduate entry requirement:


You must have a bachelor's degree awarded by a university that is officially recognised in your country.

Acceptable qualifications can include:

  • BA

  • BCom

  • BBA

  • BBM

  • BMM

  • BE (Engineering)

  • BTech

You should have the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at level 6.5 with no scores less than 5.5 in any section. We may accept equivalent qualifications. Some postgraduate programmes have additional language requirements. If you know which programme you want to study, contact us to check its requirements.

  • Tuition fees for new undergraduate students in the 2021-22 academic year are £9,250.
